What are Webmentions?
Webmentions are a way for websites to talk to each other. When someone links to one of my blog posts from their own site, they can send a webmention to let me know - and their response shows up on my post.
Think of it like @mentions, but across the entire web. No single company owns it - it's a W3C standard, part of the IndieWeb movement.
How do I respond to a post?
There are a few ways:
1. From your own website
Write a post on your site that links to one of my posts. Then paste your post's URL into the "Send a webmention" form at the bottom of my post. That's it!
For your response to show up as a reply, add class="u-in-reply-to" to your link. For a like, use class="u-like-of". For a repost, use class="u-repost-of".
2. From Bluesky or Mastodon!
Under 'Send a webmention', you may see links to a sister Bluesky and/or Mastodon post. Thanks to Brid.gy, likes and replys get forwarded to my site as webmentions and show up on the post!
Bridgy only updates once every half hour, so be patient! Your like or reply may not -- will not -- appear as a webmention until it checks again.
What shows up on the post?
- Likes - shown as a row of avatars
- Reposts - shown as a row of avatars
- Replies - shown with author, date, and content
